Show me your old guitar (pre 1980)

Post by Ilikewater »

I don't know why they stopped making them so sexy. Some of the coolest shit came out of the 60's and 70's that nobody has the ballz to do anymore. So I want to see YOUR old guitar. I'll share some of mine a bit later.

Like, odd old guitars, or just guitars in general (pre-'80)?

Not particularly odd, but she's my girlfriend. '64 Jazzy w/ only five tuners.

Kawai "Tele-Star". I got it paired with the cutest little electro-suicide switch ever.
The individual on/off switches AND individual volumes seems kinda pointless to me, but I appreciate the fact that more switches = better. When light hits the pickguard, it looks like they just sliced up a shower door to make it. Or your mom's cutting board.
It has to be strung at least as low as D standard or it's totally unplayable as a non-slide guitar. I had to sink the pickups into the body (they were attached to the pickguard alone) so the strings will clear them; I'm too afraid to mess with its truss rod.

Also, I have (sadly underappreciated in 'murrca) reissues of old guitars? :idk:

Lapsteels count? This is an early 60s Harmony H7 Roy Smeck w/ a P13 pickup.

My old Dano/Silvertone 1448L from 1965 with the electric-chair-in-case
Image

Some old acoustics too
This is a Kay N2 Jumbo from the mid 60s. Frikkin huge guitar. If there's ever a flood, I'll be OK living in this thing for a week or two.

My main guitar is a 1980 ES335 though ...

this guitar makes me feel all weird inside. I love the headstock and mojo buttons.

doesn't have to be weird, but I'm sure most will be. Old guitar's, even (especially?) strats, have the sexy distinguished look that only comes from being 30+ years old.

Two old guitars. 1960something Eko in sparkle blue, 1970something (probably '73) Mosrite Celebrity. The Eko might actually be older than me. Don't think I have beauty shots of either.

My 70's El Degas LP Custom copy. Since this photo was taken I've done a few upgrades on it, I've changed the crappy plastic saddles to graphite, replaced the tuners, the nut and the knobs. And I've got a snazzy strap on it now too. Next step will be to replace the pickups (currently pretty weak sounding single coils hidden under the covers) and all the electronics. I'll post updated photos once I do that, but it'll probably be another month or so until I get around to it.

And my 70's El Degas acoustic (which I got for free!). Plays and sounds much better than I'd expected, I like it more than my Seagull.
