actually, the Gretsch name, trademarks, and designs are owned by Fred Gretsch, Jr., the great-grandson of the founder, who used to play in the Brooklyn factory as a little boy and who bought back the rights from Baldwin in the late 1980s ("it was a dream come true"). re: Epi version of the Krist bass: in 12 to 18 months, after they've skimmed off the big-money people with the Gibby model. they did the same thing with the Slash Les Pauls, and there'll still be Kurt/Nirvana anniversaries to capitalize on.
