Total bass geek moment

Post by one bad monkey »

I took my Warwick Streamer in today to a friend's workshop to have him look it over and talk about setting it up (I'm too lazy to do it myself, and I don't mind supporting a friend pursuing a career as a luthier). After we talk about my bass and things, the conversation goes like this:

Him: "Want to see something cool?"
Me: "Sure, what is it?"
Him: "I have Jonas Hellborg's bass."
Me: "WHAAAAAAT?"

And he was right. He worked in the Wechter guitar shop when Jonas had his acoustic bass built and was the guy that did the repairs and set ups on the bass. So, when Abe sold Wechter guitars, Jonas kept sending the bass over to my friend, where it is now.

Sadly, even though I asked, I couldn't play it. It's currently without strings or a bridge, so it would've been impossible. But it was THE bass, the one on the cover of "The Word" that I bought an acoustic bass because I wanted that sound. It made me giggle.

Cool story bro  Heh, but really, that's pretty sweet, I get that way when I play the Travis Bean at my local shop, not quite the same thing, but I can't help but fantasize about being in Sunn0))) when I play it. BTW, Hellborg's stuff is legit.

Helborg's a beast.

And, obviously, it's not the wand, it's the wizard.

Nevertheless, very cool.

Of course, but does that diminish this bass? Do Jaco's "Bass of Doom" or Eddie Van Halen's early guitars not have some form of sentimental value from fans and aficionados, or its place in history (even if it is just "right instrument at the right time")? Not to me. This bass was on the albums that solidified my desire to try some solo bass stuff, and while it's not as cool as meeting Hellborg himself (which I'm told, he flies into town to pick this bass up personally), it is still pretty sweet.

I'll have to post a pic or two that my buddy let me take of it. I got to hold it also; it's GIGANTIC and heavy.

im not a believer of the "musician has ultimate control over the instrument"

i think of it as a dance where the person leads, and the instrument follows. and theres some things one instrument can do better than another. theres some stuff that i can play fine on the squier classic vibe thinline tele at guitar center thats p much the only thing there i play, that i can't play on my guitar. or when i do, it sounds like shit. right tool for the job so to speak.
