Pickup help

Post by Birthday Boy »

Trying to cover as much ground as I can with my Epiphone Les Paul for what I need to do. Budget is very much an issue, so I've been looking at GFS mostly. If there are others worth looking at around that price point I'm all ears. I also, and my guitarist too, have a Telecaster so that end of the spectrum is covered.

Thinking something like full, rich neck pickup for chords (pretty much there already but the stock pickup is kinda cardboardy and a bit bassy/boomy so maybe remedy that a bit but still full - sorta wish I could have something in between a PAF and P90). Preferably something a bit harsher and maybe a bit metallic for the bridge but still musical and with some body (not thin). A rich middle with fullness from the neck and some of the bite from the bridge for an "in between" sound that's still not dull-sounding. Not great with tone descriptors, maybe.

I was gonna get a Dream 90 for the neck and a Mini Bird for the bridge but I'm thinking the former might be not full enough and the latter has some negative reviews - apparently it's muddy rather than biting, maybe they used the wrong value for the tone cap.

Edit: Oh, and the Mini Bird isn't wide enough but according to measurements the right length so possible minor to medium hassle.

I had a friend with an Epi LP and he put a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the neck and an Invader in the bridge.........the tone of that guitar blew me AWAY!!! If the Invader's too much for you, the JB also sounds real nice and will still bring the heavy (if need be).

Anyone have faith in an Alnico II humbucker of some sort in the neck and a GFS Surf 90 (Dynasonic-alike) in the bridge? I wonder what would happen in the middle position..

I decided I can always trade or try something else, so I just ordered a pair of Surf 90s. I can always go back to the stock neck pickup and maybe use the neck Surf 90 in my tele or something.
