Power tubes??

Post by Brettski »

My JCM 2000 brew up tonight at band practice. After showing off the Aenima to my bandmates and one of our buddies, I started losing power like Scotty from star track (yeah, TRACK, cause that's what I called it when I was five), and was just as happy about it. A few minutes after cranking the input volume on my loop sampler, thinking it was the culprit, I heard a sickening POP from my amp head which proceeded to go completely mute. One of my power tubes was BLAZING hot. I ran my hand over the vents and could feel where the superheated one was with my eyes closed.

My amp tech told me one of my tubes was gonna go soon, and I've never had tubes go bad while I was using them (usually I turn on an amp and the tubes are already blown if they're bad, maybe they go while cooling :idk: ). Does this sound like power tubes to you?? Have any "holy shit my amp brew up" stories? Oh, and every post in this thread needs a picture. Since I channeled Scotty....

Sounds like it. Is it a 100 or 50 watter?

If it's a 100 you can check it by taking out the bad tube and it's twin on the opposite side.
That is test it with inside or outside pair. If it works replace the tubes. If it doesn't then it is probably something fried in the power section.

Hope this helps.

+1

This happened to the bass player in my old band during a recording session (yes, bass player who used a guitar amp - JCM2000 as well actually). Our sound engineer did exactly this with the head so we could continue recording - did the trick.

Thanks, guys. I'll try removing the bad tube and it's mate.

It's a 100W head, btw.
