I finally got around to taking apart my Jazzmaster and found that the inside and pickguard weren't shielded at all, so here's what I did with copper tape:
And then I just got a metal pickguard shield:
The difference before and after in terms of hum/hiss noise is huge, night and day even, like going from super noisy single coils to EMGs, the guitar is silent now!
It still did the annoying pickguard static noises though when I drag my finger around the guard, so I wiped it with a dryer sheet... dead silent now!

Well done Ryan. Those dryer sheets are straight magic! Regardless of the shielding I applied (which also silenced my guitar to max levels), I still get a touch of pickguard static occasionally. Dryer sheets remedy this with ease along with lending the fresh smellz!

BTW I heard that a handy source of copper tape was slug repellent tape from the gardening shop....! Not checked that out though.
