I was lusting after the Squier CV Duosonic for a while. A dealer in my town has it in the showroom, I played it and I love it. Been waiting for a good time to pick that thing up and the opportunity is now. Got some extra money from a job that I finally got paid for and it would almost cover the cost. I even went into the store with my Ampeg to compare the guitars and I loved the spankyness of the Duo that my AMG could not achieve despite it being pretty trebley. It's just that Single Coil sound I guess.
And now the bastards at Squier release that J Mascis Jazzy. And that one is tempting as well. The only trouble is that I can't seem to find one in a store so I could try it just yet.
I don't suppose anyone has played both guitars and could give me a comparison write-up?
Otherwise just use this thread to love on Jazzys, tell me to get a new amp instead or a custom paint fuck. You know.
Both look fairly slick, but I'd wait it out until you can try the JM before you make a move. at the very least, you know you dig the Duosonic, so I'd lean towards that if you don't have the patience. Every guitar in the world is different, so somebody might get a really nice Jazzmaster and pass on the message to you, and your one might not just have the same sound for whatever reason, and you'd be missing out on a guitar you know you dig.
I'm not a Jazzmaster guy, or Strat guy, but I'm digging the Duosonic.
i played the duosonic and really liked it. that being said, i'm not the short scale guy. that is why i never pulled the trigger to get one. it has more of a Tele attack due to the bridge. sounds out of the box very good and works really good for the "wald und wiesen" chords. distorted riffing has a good presence but not too much bass... i love the desert sand finish. it feels a bit like childrens guitar with the scale and the body thickness, though. but i would not care about that. (i have a super sonic: that is my short scale. so really no need to get another one for me) i have the mij mascis and really like it. better than any other jm i have ever played. Because: jumbo frets and good bridge (no hassle). i asume that the squier will be very similar to this (the trem is closer to the bridge, though). i will pull the trigger for sure. this one has more of the jm-"schwing" than the the tele attack of the duosonic. i think, that will be (beside the scale) the main factor to judge it.
One really big difference is the pickup mounting: jm: in the wood duo: screwed to the metal pickguard the latter solution kills the pickup response (i had these problems once on a strat. loved the metal pickguard but threw it off cause of tonal castration) that being said, in my test of the duosonic (in my practice space through my amp!) it sounded, like described above, really good.
Dude, you should save your money and get a new amp and custom painted Fuck instead of spending it on some "wald und wiesen" guitar.
Seriously though, I'd hit the Duosonic. If you've tried it and you like it, I wouldn't wait around to try the Jazzy, the Duo may be gone by then. If a few months from now you try the Jazzy and fall in love deal with that then.

smaller body shape+short scale+no trem vs 25.5"scale+trem+wider broad of tonez via more switcheros - Mascis Jazzy is a win for me, Id probably refinish it in nitro and replace bridge but overall Im thinking bout purchasing that Jazzy myself

lol i'm confused. i have no problem with anyone's pickup choice. i like all pickups equally (except for strats)
just out of curiosity, are you saying that P90s and jazz master pickups are the same thing? or is this about whether P90s are better than regular-ish single coils
to further muddy the waters, if the Mascis has the same "Jazzmaster" pickup they use in everything but the US models, they're basically strat pickups.
me, if I was going to get one, I'd get the Duo-Sonic. If I got the Jazzy I'd want to fix it up, and by the time I got it where I wanted I'd have spent enough to buy a Thin Skin. I don't like non-US pickups OR trems on JMs. The Duo-Sonic, I'd probably be happy to leave it as is. I've been thinking about picking up a couple of Duo-Sonics for weird tunings, actually.
