P90 pickup question

Post by adrianlee »

I'm about to buy some p90s and I need help.

DIfference between alnico 2 and alnico 5 magnets? I googled it at got a bunch of TGP answers. I want to hear it from you dudes.

These are going to go in my Gibson SG.

Also, not that it really matters, but, cream covers in this guitar will be the sexiest thing ever:

Vs tend to be a bit hotter, IIs a bit more mellow. Are you planning on routing it or buying a HB sized p90? I'm a fan of the chromes on my white SG but cream will be cool.
Good deals with: Officer Bukowski, Caesar, BriBri, Amorphous, ThePastRecedes

I wouldn't worry too much about the exact magnet...it's only one of a few factors that get a pickup to "sound" the way it does.

Just tell the winder what you want out of the pickup (if possible...if you're asking about magnets I'm assuming some customization is allowed).
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

Seeing as you're done mind if I hop on your thread?

I'm looking for recommended brands and opinions of humbucker sized P90s. Bought an Irongear one recently and it just sounds like a regular single coil with non of the p90 magic.

I know of the GFS Dream and Mean 90s and the SD Phat Cats.

Edit: How much are the sheptones?

I just put a Mean 90 into the neck position of one of my Hags. I have no prior experience with P90's except trying a Mean 90 in a bud's LP style axe and the Gibson p/up in a BFG. I like it, but I was surprised--not quite as articulate as I'd hoped with some muddy midrange, and this coming from a guy who uses humbuckers everywhere. I know TONS of people love them, so maybe I just haven't gotten it yet. I do need to spend some more time with it, but seems like another case of you get what you pay for.
Special low-frequency version.

okay, question. I got a PRS P90. Going to gut my Squier Strat and drop it in. Are you guys thinking I should put it in the neck position, or the bridge? I'm planning on only having the P90 in the Strat wired only to a volume knob before going to the output jack. I don't think it'd be in the nature of the Strat to get very heavy or anything, but I do play heavier music. Thanks for the advice dudes!

I think that's really down to personal choice, if you had both which would you use more or which position do you normally use on guitars you already have?

I'd put it in the bridge myself.

I'd say I'd put it in the bridge to have a little more bass response, but if I use it for post rock stuff, I'm thinking I might have to put it in the neck for clarity.... Might just throw a Meatbox after my fuzz in a True Bypass looper for when I want to get heavy. Kinda sucks that Squier doesn't make single Humbucker pickguards for their Strats. I'm just going to cut one out of clear plexi I suppose
