help me replace pick ups for my tele (P-90s)

Post by tashiattack »

I got a squire tele custom II. I love the guitar. Right now I installed a P-rails in the bridge. It sounds great when it works...but it craps out all the time. The one thing I don't like about the P-rails is that it sounds pretty thin when its clean, and doesn't seem to sustain as well. So i'm planning to put a good set of P-90s to replace both my pups. I'm looking for something that can get heavy but still retain that "bite" and somewhat of the tele brightness (sounds ranging from dinosaur jr, unsane, barkmarket, doom etc).

I'm fairly close to picking up a set of Manlius Goats Growl, but I'm concerned it might be too dark (17k in the bridge, and 15 in the neck). Anyone have any experience with these? Any other suggestions? I still want some single-coil brightness.

edit: something like this http://youtu.be/CONQebGe57s?t=16s

My experience with that guitar is that the stock pickups are freakin great.

In fact if you still have the OG's, I'd be glad to take them off your hands.

I don't have any experience with the Goats Growl but they shouldn't be too hot unless you are using a small amp.
You may get a little more feedback but it'll probably be the good kind.

I still have the originals :). I just find the neck a bit muddy, but i'm saving them as back ups for now. Maybe I should give them a try again.

I guess my concern with hot pickups is losing the brightness :(

Yeah, the stock pickups are a little muddy for sure, that's kind of what I liked about them though.

From the description of the Goats Growl it seems as if they have taken muddiness into consideration and done things to prevent it.

BKP Pig 90's. They can get way heavy for sure and will make the tele sound nice and fat. They still have that P90 voicing though, just a fatter, more pissed off version of it. I have them in my SG

Yeah i've checked these out before! I really want these, but for another guitar. It's just a tad bit too dark, I still want some single-coil brightness. Something like this http://youtu.be/CONQebGe57s?t=16s

Gotcha :thumb: They are pretty dark, I wish I could give you some more suggestions but I'm not very experienced with P90's

I think those sound really interesting.

I've got a Wolfetone P90 in the neck of my Prairiewood and they are worth a look, too.

Just bought a Bare Knuckle Pig 90 for my Strat. I only use a single P90, so I definitely need the output of it. Thanks for your reviews dudes!
