Squier VM series, tell me about it

Post by Instant Dan »

Looking to pick up another electric, specifically a tele, this year for other types of music.

People seem to be ranting and raving about them. Is it worth upgrading them (pickups/pots/nut)? Or should I just spend a couple Benjamins more and get something a little nicer?

I have a Classic Vibe Tele and I wouldn't change a thing about it.

I'm sort of intrigued by the VM Strat. Red with red tort is hot. Ha, not intrigued enough to buy without playing, though, not even at that super cheap price.
Maybe partying will help.

Yup, CV50s are nice (I have one as does my guitarist). Vintage Modified (which I suppose is what you actually asked about):

Custom II Tele is also nice if you wanna go P90. I assume the humbucker one (just called VM Tele Custom) is the same in which case it is also nice except I can't comment on the pickups.

Turns out they make a VM Thinline in Shoreline Gold or black, which I don't know about. There is (or maybe was?) a CV Thinline as well which I found less convincing than the regular CV Tele or VM Custom II but I spent limited time with it and have only tried that particular one.

In my opinion (which doesn't mean much), you can't get something better for a few hundred more. Other than that, I don't know. I'm not rich.

I'm just a filthy bassist, but I found the VM series to be better instruments than the cheap Fenders that they had on hand when I played them against each other. I ended up with a VM Jag bass and I really dig it. The pickups are pretty hot for passives, and sound awesome. But again, this was on bass, I can't directly speak about the guits.

My experience as well. My VM Jazz Bass was better than the MIM Jazz Basses I tried around the same time. The same applied for the other VM basses I played.

The VM guitars I've encountered have been pretty great as well. Some needed different pickups (like the three pickup teles - super flat tone...) but overall the ones I've encountered have been good players. :idk:

I miss Squier 51's. I had a Fender Atomic Humbucker and a SD Hot Rails at the neck. It was quite the player. Also had a Tele Custom II once upon a time. And I enjoyed that as well. I'm big on cheap guitars. They make me feel all dirty

I've only played the VM jazz bass, but most SX guitars/basses I have played are better.

I, too, am play bass and I have a VM Jag bass and just got a VM Mustang bass. I enjoy them both quite a bit. Haven't felt the need to upgrade anything on either. They're pretty solid.
Also, I will back the CV Thinline. I had one for a while and it felt and sounded way better than my MIM tele (stock). I'd love to have one again.

I've been wondering how the VM Mustang basses are. It's good to know they don't need any real work!

From the ones I've played, I agree. I want a VM Jag so that I can do some humbucker demos.
