Why? Cause people over there do not deserve "that much money" for a guitar?!
btw, my Mikey Way Mustang Bass is MII: superb built quality.
Um, well, it has nothing to do with what the citizens of that country deserve. I'll agree that this statement is based on almost nothing. I will say that I'm not an MIA or nothing guy. I actually prefer Fender Japan. I don't so much assume that the build quality is worse as I assume that Fender itself would put less quality parts/investment/etc. into it. I'm not sure if that makes sense.
Like I said, my new Tele is made there and I love it.
I guess I really should have said: "Why do I have to pay $350 for a Jag without a locking trem?! Is that such an expensive add-on?"
well, apparently the trem lock is a $30 part. take off the premium for selling the part separately and that's probably an extra $10 at retail markup. if they're going to take something off to drop the price, it's gonna to be the thing hardly anybody uses.

The pickup looks modern and scary to my unfrozen cave-man-ness. Does it lock into a particular sound or generally useable?
good question. i bought a Mustang mainly to put a TV Jones in (Mudfuzz'ing it). So i didn't care what is in there - the Mickey Way has the positive part that i do not have to route the body for a humbucker. But the stock pickup is useable, i would say more on the rocking side than transparent. Sorry to be a bit dull on this but i have no other short scale to compare. Between the jazz bass and the precision, more on the precision side with less fundament and more midrangey (as everybody would expect it)...

While I applaud the lowerish price point than the Mascis, reflecting the cheaper costs of MII vs MIC at this point for some things, I hope that hundred bucks doesn't cut too many corners.
The Mascis is a beautiful thing on the price/value axis.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.
The Mascis is beautiful and even though I didn't get to sit down with it for a long time before I had to get rid of it, it was so nice. The build quality was great. My only complaint is that the frets could have used a decent polishing, they felt a little rough
