Guitar players: Tell me about your Les Paul's >.<

Post by MaxMaps »

So,

I officially have the guitar gas like nobody's business. About 4 or 5 days ago I ventured into the ye old music shop and they had in a 2001 LP studio for about 800. A bit worn, but why do I give a shit seeing as I rarely leave the house with my gear. I picked it up and instantly fell in love. So I ask you,

Is it worth it too pick it up at that price or should I shop around if I really want an LP (or any variant style of Les Paul, if you suggest me one that is half and just as good I am down)

AAAANNNNDDD

tell me why they are seemingly amazing guitars. I have the bug really bad and I kinda want to know more =D

General rule of thumb for me is that if you love it, buy it.

People always give the studio models a bad rap, but, I've played some really nice ones, for sure.

With that being said, I've seen studios go for 500-600 on my local craigslist and at the local guitar center.

And there is the reason why I ask before I buy. I tend to see some prices way too high at some times.

I still do love it though >.<

Does the shop take trades? MAybe you can let something go you're not playing too much?

Another thing to ask yourself is, if you wait and try a few more that are cheaper, will you be upset if this one is gone? If the answer is yes, I'd say make it happen.

I would have to play with it one more time to make that call. If I was going to be in town my ass would be there tomorrow scheming. When I get back in two weeks, I really do need to get some stings for the bass but if it is still there I am going to pick it up and see if I get that magic feeling again.

I really don't think it will sell but you never know. a LOT of guitars out there.

One thing to note on cheaper Studios is that they are likely the faded finishes, which don't feel as nice to me as the glossy finishes. $800 for a used Studio with some 'wear is still a bit high though, I sold my mid 90's Studio (which was admittedly more than a little worn) on Craigslist for $650 or $700 a couple of years ago.

I know it had a glossy finish.

The shop where the axe is at is a cool place and I highly recommend it. The owner is rad too and I know he needs to make a profit off of it too keep the doors open.

God I wish I had taken pictures.

All I can say about LPs is that my guitarist played tons of the things before finding the right one.. there was always something not right or something.. in the end a The Heritage was the winner and it was like 800 :idk: it is a pretty scary guitar.. so if you really like the one you found well...

Yea, price seems a bit high, I sold my 91 or so Studio with HSC for $675 a couple years back. I know prices have gone up and all but Gibson's race to the bottom on models and prices in the last few years has deflated the real world value of non-vintage stuff by a bit IMO.

Did well as I was working at a pawn/gun shop when I bought it and got it at our cost which was criminally lower. ;0

I liked the guitar but couldn't justify keeping it for what it cost, and when I needed cash, it was the first thing to go. Story of al the Gibsons I've owned - just couldn't love one enough to want to keep it.

I've only loved two guitars with factory buckers in my life: Hamer Standard from the Judas Priest days and my Jaguar CP HH.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

I've got an '03 Gibson Les Paul Studio. I keep thinking about selling it as it gets by far the least play of my instruments these days, but it was a gift and whenever I pick it up it just feels fantastic. Maybe it's because I've had it for nearly ten years, but that guitar is just so comfortable to play. The stock pickups aren't really doing it for me right now and I should probably swap something else in. Sounds really good through a treble boost though.

the prices vary a lot. I read all the time about all the cheap used les pauls but since the flood a couple of years ago and then gibson's problems with wood, the market has changed a bit. I've been looking for another cheap lp lately but haven't really found many good ones.

if you like the guitar and are comfortable paying that much, then buy it. it may be a while before you find another.

I bought a used '93 studio when I was 16 (15 years ago) and I've been playing it ever since. it's a great guitar. could use a little refreshing at this point, but I love it.
