NGD: Crazy People and Vintage Epiphone Content

Post by terminalvertigo »

Saw this guitar online, original owner mentioned his parents bought it for him in 1965 or 1966, and he never ended up playing it much, it just sat in the closet.

I was a bit concerned because after i purchased it, the owned mentioned it didnt have a case, and said he would build a wooden crate to ship it in..

I "convinced" him using cardboard would be easier, and he reluctantly agreed. I assumed like a rational person that he would find a box for it...

The cardboard sheet folded into a makeshift box arrived, and i immediately grabbed my camera. I thought for sure the neck would be broken after i saw this atrocity. He had secured the cardboard box with blue painters tape

cut the tape at the top of the box and out came a 2' by 1' piece of house insulation, followed by another piece the same size. great choice of packaging materials!....
Image

It gets weirder.

Next out of the box came a childrens vintage puffy winter jacket.

Then a woodland camo (what i am assuming) to be a rifle case?
Image
held my breath as i unzipped the rifle case, and to my joy, no broken neck or headstock.

I took the 5 original very rusty strings off the guitar, adjusted the action, put on some 11's and have never been so happy as i was that moment

Looks like i have a "brand new" vintage epiphone silverfox to break in.

I'm not sure I'm buying the story that it wasn't played much. It looks like it's got lots of wear (and some finish crazing too).
(Why aren't the strings strung through the tailpiece?)

all vintage guitars will get finish crazing to some degree, and it does have some bumps and bruises, my guess from just being moved around, however the neck is like glass :)

It hasn't logged many hours, yet ;)

I don't have the bar, so i just wrapped it using the tailpiece.

Yeah, I know that all guitars may get crazing, but yours looks like it's got a lot and I think guitars that get used tend to have more than ones that've lived mostly in closets.

You've the guitar in hand and I've only got these photos. So, if you think it's not been played much, I'll defer to you.

Great score, btw. Love that color. Enjoy it.

Damn! That thing is worth it for the story alone! So strange and awesome. AND the guitar itself looks great! I love stories like this.

that looks more like "sitting around in the closet getting dinged" wear than play wear to me. it's clearly been used some, because the vibrato plate has surface scratches (these could actually be oxidation fropm the strings, though), but it hasn't been played enough for the plating on the bridge and pickup cover to be affected. the bridge doesn't show much string wear or replacement/adjustment scratchings, and the PU pole pieces haven't had their heads flared by adjusting them with the wrong size of screwdriver, nor have the bridge adjustment studs been messed up. it seems legit. by the way, the stamped "2" above the serial number indicates that this was a factory 2nd...Mom and Dad got a deal.

Yeah, I noticed that too.

You guys are probably right about the wear. Especially since it came without a case (and was shipped so interestingly as well).

FWIW, Silverfox is the color. That's a Coronet.

Which, as fans of Steve Marriott know, is a bad ass piece of gear. Nice score!

congratulations! i would've just let him build the damn box.

this reminds me of when i received a pedal in what was essentially a half-torn manila envelope. plastic enclosure, plastic-shafted jacks... i was sure it would be severely damaged. somehow it survived. well enjoy the relief and the musical ecstasy!
