Jaguar with 12's

I know that Jaguars were created with the intent of using thicker strings for Jazz playing. I've got a set of 10's on mine right now and they're kind of wonky. Thinking about swapping it out for 12's or even thicker and setting up for C standard.

Also, flatwounds on guitar? Anyone? What kind of playability are we talking about? Is there much of a difference/can you trem pick or does that render them useless?

Just have the Jaguar laying around and wanted to try something different. I play fast.

My buddy put some flats on his Strat and it was really cool to play. They're generally pretty heavy strings so it's not so good for leads with bending and such.

They have a dark sound but it's not like muddy darkness. There's still definition, but less high end.

I felt like my picking wasn't really affected. I think you could do your tremolo picking (I like how you know what tremolo means) just the same as always, with maybe a little less noise from the pick.

I've got flat 11s on my Jazzy right now. I think Bukowski's looking for "mellow" to describe the sound.

When I first put them on they felt kind of sticky. Or like there was a lot of friction or something. Either that went away or I got used to it though.

And there's less string scratchy noise with them both from the pick and your fingers.

So yeah, could be cool on a Jag.

Sweet. I think I'm gonna do it. Any suggestions on brand? Was looking into D'Addario XL Chromes Medium 13-56. In C standard or drop C I don't think it would have an unbearable amount of string tension, especially considering the 24" scale

Not sure what brand, but 13 flats in c standard would be pretty awesome

I'm using those D'Addarios myself, but they're the only ones I've used. So yeah, those.

I use .10 Chromes on my SGV-300, a similarly surfy guitar, and they are the shit. Flatwounds are best wounds anyway though. Supposedly chromes are among the brightest flats, but theyre still not as zingy as rounds. I feel that flats through fuzz make chords n stuff more discernable because everything doesnt get whacked into trebly albini zing mode. I am pretty biased against rounds though and particularly hate stainless steel ones...

They do feel kinda weird and sticky at first but playing will get rid of that. Using rounds again will be weird because all that finger sliding noise wasn't there before.

I also recommend .13's if your doing c standard, I don't own any guitars with flatwounds anymore but they are fun to play and really easy to get used to. What you sacrifice in bend-a-bility you make up for in slide-a-bility. And yeah i would describe them as mellow tone wise. I've wanted to get a guitar to setup for slide guitar using flat's for a while, too many other things are taking my GAS attention though.

I get kinda bend-happy when I play black metal, but I'll just have to put some more effort into it, especially with these electrical cords as guitar strings. BUT IM UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I figure if nothing else it'll be a cool transition guitar having the thicker strings.

I might have to put some flats on my Kramer now that you mention slidabilty. Although I've kindof got a warm spot in my heart for the small little creaks and scrapes from round wounds that the Kramer showcases. Hmmmm

That's actually my only gripe with flatwounds. I like making annoying pick scraping noises, and they're not as annoying.
