I just ordered some LaBella Flats for my Mustang Bass from Elderly Instruments (See my NGD thread). They're only $31, and LaBellas are fuckin' hoooooot.

Ah yes. I almost bought one of those a few years ago, but held off, and then ended up getting the Hofner "Icon" Bass. I think you'll find that flatwounds make a huuuuuuuuuuge difference with the violin style bass.

If you like those, you should try the LaBella Beatle Bass strings. Excellent quality.

Just put a set of D'addario flats on my Musicmaster bass today, and holy fucking hell I love it! Next time I restring it I'll probably go for Labellas or something nice like that, the D'addarios were the only short scale flats I could find locally.

Just out of curiosity, did you ever get a chance to try the Rogue? I almost bought the Hofner Icon, but figured I'd try the one that's half the price and see if it's worth a damn and if not return it for the Icon. How do you enjoy the Hofner?

WIth most flats the upfront cost isn't a big deal, but I use bass strings for literally years and years and years most of the time.

I'm still using a set of stainless Fender flats I put on the bass in '00 or so. Maybe I can change them someday but they still sound good.

And the stainless gives both protection from my terrible body chemistry and a little more snap and high end to the thud. Works very well on my Jazz.

Jesus Henry Christ, the Rogue came today...it is the biggest piece of shit I have ever played. Going back, right away!

Think I'll try an Epi EB-0 and just flip it and see how that goes. Finding a shortscale lefty bass is impossible.

Heeeeeeey there. Sorry to hear about the Rogue. Never got a chance to try one... this was like a decade ago. I'd only ever had or needed my P-Bass, but had always at least wanted to try a Hofner. They didn't offer a low-end model back in the day, but I was able to get one recently. I really like mine. I got it off eBay from a guy who was very honest and forthcoming about the guitar... basically brand new, with a case, and he'd put the gold "teacup" knobs on it to make it more "authentic". The strings that came with it were shit, but as I mentioned, you get some LaBella flats on there and it's a GREAT guitar. Yes, it feels kinda cheap, and doesn't look like REAL wood like the real Hofners, but I think for the most part the body and neck+fretboard are high quality. What it lacks are good, solid parts like tuners (although cheap, they stay in tune pretty well) and pickup holders. The things that hold the pickups in place are plastic, and both of mine broke after a while. So I'm currently having my local guitar shop install some metal holders that will keep the pickups in place.

The Hofner Icon is a great instrument if you want to get some upgrades for it... most of mine were already done, and with the exception of the new strings (necessary) and the pickup fixes (not necessary), it's an excellent low-end bass. Try one out!

I use LaBellas on my Dano DC bass, they're the best flats I've tried and $31 is a deal.
