Broke Neck Gibsons
so whats everyones thoughts on buying gibsons with neck repairs
purchase or just stay away from?
i mean it hurts its value forever but im sure if its done right it would be just as it was pre neck break
anyone had issues in the long run maybe with tuning, warping or something?

Re: Broke Neck Gibsons
I bought a Les Paul with a broken neck in 1997. I still have it and I've never had a single issue with it.
but it definitely depends on the guitar, the break, and the quality of the repair. LPs are generally more stable than SGs to begin with, so that's something to consider.

In a technical sense, a *properly* glued neck will be stronger than a non-glued neck. It'll also probably be fine for the life of the guitar.
That being said, a DIY job that's botched? That'll cause you all kinds of trouble, and could also make it far more time consuming and costly to repair.

Talking out of my ass here: Every time I have seen this come up on a forum, people say that if it was done right then it will be even stronger than before.

It's because the glue is technically stronger than the wood. You have a much stronger material at the weakest point, making it stronger than it was before.
Again, that's if it's done properly with the correct glue, correct clamping and pressure, etc.

If the seller is telling you that the repair was done professionally, ask them to include the receipt of the repair as part of the sale. If they ever planned to resell the guitar, they would have kept the receipt. Otherwise, Caveat Emptor!
Good B/S/T dealings with: univalve, DannDubbleEwe, Shish, ThePastRecedes, GiAnt_ROboT, chutneyfarmer, Muse FTW, robapov, skullservant, MaxMaps, psychedelicrelic, guitarslinger21, space6oy, theshoegazer, bongoben, osbornkt

Okay. I was going to suggest that, but didn't want to pass on information I didn't know was completely true. Good to know.

I googled search, and didn't come up with anything. I don't think they do that kind of thing, otherwise I'd imagine you'd hear about people sending their guitars to them or ebay sellers being like, "Certified fixed by Gibson factory..." or some shit.
But again, I don't know for sure. I should probably stop posting in this thread.

Re: Broke Neck Gibsons
I broke the headstock clean off my LP about 5 years ago. Had a highly reputable local repair shop fix it, something they'd done a million times, and I was assured it would be a better stronger neck than before.
It's probably just that they set the guitar up really well but I've always thought it stayed in tune and played better after the fix.

After my Epiphone LP headstock broke, I took to a fantastic luthier.
It seemed more solid after the fix. It was weird.

broken neck'd gibsons when done right are good guitars with an extra $300 in your pocket.

foolishly sold it. saw it on the wall in GC last time i checked they wanted $5000...
