Dark Stars are no longer in production and are apparently pretty hard to come by now. Seems like people don't want to part with them. I checked the completed listings section on eBay and someone had two of them for sale in separate auctions and they went for $449 apiece. You may want to put an WTB ad on Talkbass in their B/S/T forum and see if you get a bite.
Good B/S/T dealings with: univalve, DannDubbleEwe, Shish, ThePastRecedes, GiAnt_ROboT, chutneyfarmer, Muse FTW, robapov, skullservant, MaxMaps, psychedelicrelic, guitarslinger21, space6oy, theshoegazer, bongoben, osbornkt

Fred, the maker, has basically just dropped off the face of the planet for about the trillionth time. This time seems to be the longest and most permanent feeling.

T Daguet "Dag-Stars" and Hanson Chisonics are the things they seem to be talking about. Curtis Novak has a Bisonic-like pickup for Gibson EB slots and is developing a more straight-up Bisonic copy, too.

I have chisonics in my lakland and I a/b'd them with my bass teachers lakland with dark stars. The chisonic has more bass for a very full"bassy roundness" if that makes sense. The darkstars have standard bass but more mids and treble response. Also the chisonics are super loud, loudest pickups I've ever heard actually, the darkstars have avg. output in terms of pickups. Darkstars are closer to J-pickups that chisonics in my opinion. The bass my teacher has with the darkstars is from the first lakland run of that particular bass, it's so awesome, it even has concentric knobs!
