on the topic of pickup splits and series/parallel and whatnot, seymour duncan has this thing for full sized humbuckers called the triple shot switching mounting ring. it lets you switch from series to parallel and front or back coil, with little switches on the mounting rings. works if you use them on the bridge and neck pickups or just on one pickup.

There's a very slight perceived drop, as it's a drop in output, but not like the halving that splitting causes.
I did the same thing (Series/Split/Parallel) with my neck pickup only Tele and Telemaster using the standard Tele three way switch.
I used a Bareknuckle Warpig and when in Series it measures 17k, in Split 8.5k and in Parallel it measures 4.25k.
There is actually a bigger volume drop going from Series to Parallel then Series to Split.
The tone in Parallel is closer to the Series tone than the Spit tone is though.
I'm not sure exactly why this is. I just know it's SCIENCE!

Re: Dimarzio pickups / Tone Zone S (in my Duo Sonic)
I was testing last night to double-check on the vol drop thing...there's a slight drop when I'm playing clean (my other guitar just has a series/split toggle, and the output drops more comparatively). But into fuzz, I can't notice a difference. Just an EQ difference as highs increase and lows/low-mids seem to drop. At least with the TZ, it still sounds powerful...I like the parallel setting a bit more for edgy metal like playing.
I'm also using it with a 22.7" scale. When I get a TZ in my 24.75" scale guitar, I'll do it with a series/split/parallel so I can compare the split tone.
Maybe different pickups react differently? Or it's my ears or amp? Or the AB-Synth's high gain fuzz, which I was using...

Glad someone is getting into the Tone Zones! I have had one in one of my guitars for 12 years now and have no intention of changing it out. Sounds awesome. And you're right about series/split/parallel - heaps of sounds there! I also concur on the volume drop into fuzz. It's more noticeable with lower gain stuff, but it is higher than single coil mode, just as you said Tom.

I love Dimarzio! I had (have, it doesn't work) a bass with an X2N, that rails P bass pickup I can't remember the name of, and... the single-coil sized humbucker that's supposed to sound like a PAF. The X2N is absolutely fantastic for switching, since it has tons of power. In single coil mode it's still as powerful (maybe more so) as a regular single coil.
Pickups vary quite a bit, but generally parallel will have a larger voltage drop than splitting because the two coils then load eachother down (Like plugging into a pedal with low input impedance). The inductance of the coils is why it gets darker when they're loaded down, hence sounding more like series when the coils are in parallel. But, it still blocks hum! So there's that!

Nice! The black and pink is rad. If I didn't hate neck pickups I would love this guitar even more.

Well, if you ever try a Duo, the neck pickup might please you. Somewhere between the Duo's short scale, its bridge plate, or the aftermarket Alnico Vs, or the aftermarket aluminum saddles...the neck pickup in this sounded like the wrath of a hundred tele bridge pickups.
Hence the Graph Tech saddles & the Tone Zone in the neck.
