Well, Padouk is supposed to be fine for a natural finish, and I like the idea of a guitar that oxidizes as its ages. So I'm thinking I'll finish the body in tung oil to protect the Alder back, and if it ever needs it, I'll just touch up the back, but let the front continue to oxidize. The only question left is whether to stain the back with an oil-based stain first before doing the tung oil. Thoughts? Ideas? I don't know that any brightly colored stain would match the padouk, and a plain dark ebony or walnut stain might be too much. A bone white back to the guitar will also (probably?) look silly.

The neck is going to be satin lacquer.

I prefer woodgrain over glassy piano-finish anyways, so I really like the idea of no finish.

i think a darker stain would look good. i used to do natural grained guitars and the ones i kept have aged wonderfully. i've never had to do anything to them from when they were first assembled. i'm not afraid to beat on a guitar either...they resist scratches better than a glossy finish.

Hmm, in that case I'll either do it ebony (minwax onyx looks like a good bet) or try to make the orange with an orange/brown that'll look nice.

Oil finishes are great for guitars because they have this natural feel and look with some protection and you can quickly reapply over scratches, but you should try some oil finishes with some varnish mixed in. It gives more protection and feels like oil, but doesn't get tacky when it is hot. Kinda a happy medium.

That being said I like to use just a basic furniture beeswax. My shit smells like honey.

So I got the Telemaster body routed for standard Tele pickups, and now I'm thinking about pickups. (I can route out more at my luthier friend's shop, if I need to, so the Tele route is a good starting point, with as much wood as possible still there.)

Thinking I'd like to get a blend of Tele and Jazzmaster sounds. Particularly dat Nels Cline Jazzymaster lead tone that he has in Wilco (with the Fulltone '69, is )

I know that Nels is using Antiquities in his main Jazzmaster. So I was thinking an Antiquity II Jazzmaster neck pickup and a Seymour Duncan Vintage Stack in the bridge*. Thoughts?

(Listening just to the Seymour Duncan sound samples, these sound the least muffled out of the various options on both clean and overdriven, so I'm guessing together they'd really shine.)
