I really didn't like the Gretsch. I do like the Ultra VI quite a bit, but the switching on that new Bass VI is much more my style. As is the body shape. And trem. But not the bridge. The Ultra VI is really neck heavy, which can be kind of a bother. I'm going to check out that Bass VI at NAMM...

The old one had sd mini-humbuckers, coil taps, and a 5 way selector switch. The new one has sd jag pups and jaguar-style pickup selection sliders.

Probably fine in D. I think C is where you'll have some interesting times finding the right kind of strings for that scale length

Yeah, the neck is kind of wide for my tastes. I played one for a few minutes at NAMM, and I also played a friends custom shop VI. I prefer my Ultra VI over all.
The new fender is nice, very nice. If I wasn't used to my UVI and was buying new, I might have gotten the fender.

Re: Fender Pawn Shop Bass VI vs Schecter Ultra VI????
got the Bass VI two weeks ago, had it set up with a set of Daddario EXL158 to tune AEADF#B.
I might put the .072 & .058 (from the XL156 set) back on to replace the two lower strings. we'll see. the .062 feels thin to me.
aside from that I really like the way it feels and for big drone chords it's excellent, exactly what I'm looking for. I probably won't be using it live, but for recording it's going to be perfect. I like the pickups on it too, especially the bridge.
The bridge is a bit on the cheap side, but I might change that for a mastery bridge in a few months, we'll see.
i've got to watch out for my V30 spaekers. this pushes lots of fundamental.
