Past or present Bobkat owners?

Post by pigmaker »

How was/is your Bobkat experience? What's this guitar play like?

I can't figure out what a good price is for one of these. I have been led to believe that the original pickups alone are worth a load.

Whoops, missed this.

I used to have a Bobkat. Really nice guitar. It was pretty compact and very light. The one I had played well. I don't know what current prices are and I can't really say that the pickups were anything special. Sure, they sound nice, but not that nice compared to other vintage pickups. So, I don't know if they're worth a load. If you find a Bobkat at what you think is a reasonable price, buy it. Fun little guitar.

Thanks Chank! Yeah I read on some forum the dearmond pickups alone are worth about 125-150 a pair. Not sure why. Havent heard a bobkat in person myself.

No problem, you're welcome. I'm sure some DeArmond pickups are worth that, but not all DeArmond pickups are created equal. Some definitely sound better than others. I didn't know that type of DeArmonds were that highly coveted. Maybe? The pickups on the one I had were just clear, nice sounding, well balanced single coils.

people will pay it if they're all nicely ripped out and polished up and photographed and eulogised, true ... but they made a lot of these guitars at the height of the teenage electric guitar craze. they're out there, you'll find one for maybe $250 to $300 that will be a hell of a lot of fun.

i love em. they feel a little weird and toylike at first, but i play kays and silvertones and harmonys live and love the sounds from those cheap little pickups.

I love DeArmond pickups, and low gain vintage pickups in general. The DeArmonds with the diamond pattern on the cover sound especially good to me. I've never had a Bobkat per se, but I've had quite a few Kays and Harmonys and Silvertones and the like, and I just love 'em. Nice and light, and the necks are always super comfortable to me. And something about the generally shorter bodies with the bridge set further back on the body makes a full scale length Kay feel like really comfortable shorter scale guitar to me. Love em. Love em. Love em.
