Favorite Recordings based on production?

Post by Vuvuzela »

I just want to see what everybody calls their favorite record based on the recording/qualities of the engineering and mix alone.

i love career suicide by a wilhelm scream, not just because the music is sick, but because everything sounds massive, but the mix breathes nicely.
you can hear and feel the drums, the bass sits perfectly, and i've had a hard time finding another "hi-gain punk" guitar sound I've liked more.

what are some of your faves?

I really like the absurdly blown-out mixtoans of Mainliner, High Rise, Teengenerate and older Guitar Wolf.
They did something just right...it (well maybe with the exception of early Guitar Wolf) doesn't really sound like basement recordings. Engineered, but is also deliciously raw and shitty.

Almost anything from the 1970s by Lee Perry or George Clinton.

The album that immediately sprang to mind was "OK Computer."

Everything Flying Lotus produces is stellar. I can only hope to be half as good with my own beats.

I guess you can add Teo Macero's electric period work with Miles to my little list.

I tend to think of it more as editing than production, but what's the difference?

Chank and I are pretty much on the same wavelength here. I'd add the three Big Star records done at Ardent in Memphis - the sounds on those records are just incredible. The Ardent engineers/producers - Jim Dickinson, Terry Manning and John Fry - were amazing. Listen to what Manning did with ZZ Top on "Tres Hombres".
Eno knew a thing or two as well. His early solo albums kill me, as does his production on "Remain in Light" by Talking Heads.
But there are just so many good records and recording out there. It's hard to come up with a shortlist of favourites.

Yeah, that's my favorite Talking Heads record by far.

I guess I like heavy-handed production.

Although, there's nothing wrong with throwing up a couple mics in the Blumlein array if the situation calls for it.

^ Yeah, it all depends on the band and the feel of the record. The production should never be the be all and end all in itself - it has to work with the music. So something relatively "dry" (like Brian Paulson's production on Slint's "Spiderland") can work just as well as something "wet" (eg, anything Jeff Lynne's ever touched).
Anyhoo, so many great records, so little time…

I like a range of styles...so context is crucial:

Bitch Magnet - Star Booty (infamous as being a complete mess of a recording...that somehow still sounds perfect to me)
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
Slint - Spiderland
Nirvana - In Utero
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
The GZA - Liquid Swords
Black Moon - Enta Da Stage
Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires
Lush - Split
The White Stripes - Elephant
Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica

Honorable mention to Dangerdoom - The Mouse & The Mask
[B/S/T shoutouts] Shortlist: Hollow Earth|Ct5|856|Condor|Thermae|OP-1|half track reel2reel|Prophet6 ... :whoa:

Acid King's Busse Woods,
Brant Bjork's Jalamanta,

Comets on Fire's Blue Cathedral,
and Peter Tosh's equal rights.
And the Pink Floyd Discography '69-'80.

Filosofem is another "infamous like Star Booty" recording only it was intended that way...and definitely sounds awesome as a result.

Also neglected to mention Silkworm - Firewater
DJ Shadow - Endroducing
The ANALORD box set
Portishead - Dummy
Nas - Illmatic
Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
