generally it sucks. and your circuits in your house might not be bridged.

Sucks why/how? Everything I've been reading suggests it's reasonable solution for expanding a network, specifically in my case into an area where wifi doesn't reach reliably

Buy your adapters from a place that has an ok return policy and give it a shot.

Worked for a friend that was too lazy to run CAT5.

powerline networking all depends on how 'clean' your ac power is in your area. And if all the circuits in your home are bridged; many houses have two or more separate circuits that are not bridged and thus cannot communicate with each other.

Like said, find some place with a good return policy and try them out; can't hurt. But don't expect miracles.

Return policy - aka amazon - is definitely part of the plan. Running cable isn't an option - I'm in an apartment, and the room that needs to be wired is at the complete opposite end of the space from the router.
