Great looking truck man. I might make one suggestion. I would get rid of the grill protection. They usually don't stop anything serious from doing damage, and if you ever get into a fender bender, even a minor one, it makes sure it spreads thousands of dollars of damage across the entire front of the truck. Bumper, hood, lights, grill can all take some pretty serious damage. But that's just me. But some people dig em.

@misterstomach Can you get your Toyotas in Diesel?

i was thinking of taking off the brush guard on the front as it's not really my style anyway. the only appeal is that the previous owner installed a 22" LED light bar on that thing that's bright as fuck when you turn on the brights. it's kind of cool, i guess, but i'm still up in the air about it. the dude had a business selling LED lights and other accessories for off road vehicles, so this thing has those all over it. it's like a prison break whenever i put it in reverse at night. kind of nuts how many back up lights he put on it.

as far as diesel, i've seen one or two from the 80's in diesel, but they're extremely rare. i also know one dude who bought a modern diesel engine from japan and got it shipped over and put it in his older toyota pickup and made it work with a transmission he could get over here. he built the truck out to run on grease and everything and made this killer apocalypse truck. it's super cool, but he had some money and time to put into it at the time that a lot of folks don't have. i found one old toyota diesel for sale a few years ago for a decent price that i though of buying, but upon research it seemed that if anything ever broke you would never find the fucking parts as those things are so rare over here. everything i touch breaks, so it seemed like not the truck for me. as far as i know, no small pickups have been available in diesel over here since the 80's for a variety of really stupid reasons. although i think that'll change soon hopefully. i spent a big chunk of change a few years ago on a small 80's dodge diesel 4x4 with a rebuilt engine. it was also japanese made (as there's never been a small american diesel) by mitsubishi. it was a dodge power ram 50, which was the exact same truck as a mitsubishi mighty max. the engine had tons of problems from the rebuild and no one could work on it as parts weren't available and no one had ever seen one other than the mechanic i bought it from. he rebuilt the engine a second time after it blew up a few months after i bought it and when it blew up again a few months later we got in a screaming match and i sold it for a huge loss. after that i've not been too stoked on tracking down obscure small diesel engines, as i don't want to get burned again.

Congrats Mr. S!

Also, these wood grain guitars are sexy as all fuck!

Don't you guys have the Hilux Toyotas? Those are highly sought after here, because, you can't get them. Or it's so much a paint that it is hardly worth it.

my understanding is that the hilux is the exact same other than the nameplate as what was just marketed in america as the toyota pickup until 95.5 when they introduced the tacoma. it was just a model name they used some places that they didn't use in the US for whatever reason.

My dad has a hilux, it is one of my favourite drives.
Our hilux model looks a fair bit different from the one Stomach posted. The style sides are usually driven by tradies who aren't loading big equipment like cement mixers, and saws and shit, and are more common as 2 wheel drive.
Mostly people opt for tray backs, so it's a proper ute, and is a bit more practical and less precious.
Lots of them are fourbies, but there has been a culture of getting the two door two wheelers and dropping them on their guts to look lower. Which is fucking pointless to me, but most of the dudes doing it are brocore dick faces, so, you know.
Also we got turbo diesels everywhere. They fucking rule.
Someone tried to give my mum shit because she drives a Mitsubishi Triton. That thing is also rad.
I still love my Zook, though.
We have a lot of fourbies in our family

Kaos is bang on about the rollas. Cannot be killed!

Thanks Clifton!! Oh and go with a tele pickup sized blade humbucker.... trust me. :thumb:

Do it, that thing looks rad as hell. Just please for the love of Cthulhu, put the strings through the tailpiece correctly.

Thanks! It's the pickguard that makes it so snazzy IMO, its unusually long and obtuse but it works just right as well.

misterstomach wrote:i just bought a truck today. my old '85 nissan is dying a slow death and recently started making a noise which makes me believe it's basically undriveable until i dump a bunch of cash into it. and i drive a lot for work and depend on having a good truck. i just spent a shitload of money on a 99 tacoma, which leaves me at the eating ramen and hoping i don't break a string level of broke for the moment, but hopefully my truck woes will be behind me for a while. this is pretty much my dream truck. cosmetically imperfect, which helped keep the price low and i don't care about that shit, but it's got the bells and whistles that i care about. it's black, v6 5 speed, 4x4 with all of the factory off road options you could want plus a few aftermarket upgrades, relatively low miles. it's pretty much perfect as far as i can tell. the only problem so far is that my old canopy that i was planning to reuse is a fucking inch and a half too short for this truck. bullshit. oh well. anyway, it's no new guitar celebration, but a hell of a big deal for me. every other vehicle i've owned in my life has been from '85-87, so this is quite an upgrade. cup holders! air conditioning! what a concept!

Congrats Parker!!!! Those Tacoma's are nice as shit and should last you quite a while. Don't worry you'll have a NGD soon enough, and as pointed out new vehicle days are just as good if not sometimes better than a new guitar day.

Toyota HiLux > than any other small pickup from back in the day

The pic makes the the truck look pretty freakin nice, sweet score on that bud. And all those backup lights might come in handy especially if you haul any gear (musicial or work related) at night cause youc an turn em on and illuminate everywhere.

Nice choice in the Toyota. I roll around in a tacoma as well. just regular 2 wheel drive, it's a 2002. It's been great since I got it back in 2010. before that I had a 95 Nissan pickup that I drove since I was 18. before that it was a 82 Buick Regal... I kinda wish I had that one back.

Nice shirt wild.

the 3rd gen tacos and 4runners are bulletproof. Great choice! If it's an auto w/the 5vze don't expect more than 18 mpg running 32" a/t's....but gas is cheap so shred on!

Toyotas are a solid vehicle choice. They last a long time even if you don't take care of them, seemingly forever if you do. I used to drive a Corolla and I drive a Tundra now. My wife used to drive a Matrix, it was nearly totaled twice, she drove it about 120 miles round trip commute every day to work for years and it had over 100K miles on it when she traded it in, still in good running condition.

Nice ones on the guitars and the Tacoma!

I've recently become a bigger fan of japanese engineering. Got a broken down 77 280z for a song and have already ripped it apart and its about 75% back together. I like old cars and have had a few and I can say that, without question, this has been the easiest, most pleasant one to deal with. Everything makes sense and bolts are almost always 10mm. Left on the to do list is brakes, wiring, and interior. Allready got it running with the help of a good friend. That was the big question as failure to get it running is why it was for sale. (it was a vacuum leak)

I checked it out, sounds good, just like you said... not my bag so I can't say much more than complimenting the tone.

LOCOPELAND, if you don't think you'll ever get to see them again then do it. I've spent hefty amounts in able to see Deep Purple and Iron Maiden. I rather spend the money and be happy I went cause money comes and goes. but being disappointed with yourself for not going or doing something... that lasts forever.
