Get a 2nd mic. Put it back by where you play at by your ear level that you like hearing. Record both mics to separate tracks. Invert the phase of one of them and pan each hard left and right. Then adjust the panning and levels to taste. This will get you a nice wide stereo field and recover some of the missing bass while reducing the treble.

That's probably what your tone actually sounds like without the benefit of distance and angle.

Just EQ the damn thing. The instant you're putting yourself in a mix with other instruments your ego and superstition regarding your tone needs to go out the door.
