you're doing it wrong
at one point I read that Japanese Buddhists use itching as a means to get even more detached, just let it go, notice the happening but let it pass. the more you focus on it the stronger it gets, energy flows where attention goes. that helped.
I know, I tried! But it started in my eyeball, then worked its way to the top of my head to the point that it felt like something was crawling on me. Fortunately, that wasn't the case. But it led to a "false start". After I scratched, I was able to successfully meditate.
Plus, I'm not quite on the same level as a Japanese monk. But that IS a goal of mine. Truth be told, I'd meditate in the past with some success. Then I'd get lazy and quit But I've decided to meditate for 40 days as a "reverse Lent" type of deal. I gave up smoking, so I figured I'd gain something (no I didn't give up smoking for Lent, I gave it up because one of my kids asked me to, money, and cancer risk). So I'm very much a novice.
