We definitely want skateboards rather than longboards. Are longer/wider ones easier to learn on, especially for bigger peeps? I'm a pretty big guy myself (6'4", 190lbs).

Really I just need a big-ass standard-shaped deck.

If you can swing it get some old reissues of 80's boards, like a powell peralta skull and sword...they are wide and super easy to learn on.

Or get a blank, but make sure its wide enough and wide trucks and softer wheels. To start with tighten up the trucks so it doesnt wobble much...and dont go downhill until you have established a good balance...downhill death wobbles are extremely scary when you just start out!

In the late 70s early 80s I used to go downhills on one of the skinny moulded plastic boards. They would get some serious speed wobbles. Came unstuck quite a few times. Scabs all over. Would never stop me from trying again the next day. The stupidity of childhood

i only got comfortable with it when i learnt how to do cess slides...then downhill became fun. Until that point i use to bail everytime i wobbled or intentionally crash into a car or tree to stop myself!

Sebastian Keep.

Reds are good. Save up for bones swiss ceramic bearings though. Nothing compares and they last you forever if you take good care of them. I've had mine for almost four years now. Still smooth and super fast.

Man... I thought I was done. I'm 43, and haven't really skated for about 13-14 years.
Last summer, one of the students working in my office brought in his older brother's Dominion board from the 80s - I was ALL OVER that, cruising the parking lot. Doing slides, fast-plants, manuals, shove-its and hospitals. Hands-down, one of the best day of the summer!

Last weekend, i took my son to the skatepark for the first time this year. He brought his scooter and skateboard (I was lobbying - hard - for him to just bring his board). He mostly rode his scooter because he's most comfortable on it. At one point, he laughed and said I should jump on his board and chase him around the park.
Okay!
:D

Wasn't 15 minutes and he was chasing me! LOL What an amazing day! Anyway...
I stopped in at the shop down the street from me, this afternoon. Bought a complete! Mother board, Indies, Direct wheels (made in Toronto) and reds.
Hitting up the park tomorrow. I can hardly wait!
