On a serious note, we've gone on a break to do some self discovery (whatever that means) and determine whether we can actually change what is wrong with our relationship or not

This couldn't have come at a worse time, as I just had my first teaching observation, and now I have <week to write a 3500 word assignment on inclusion and reasonable adjustment for disabilities in the classroom, as well as around 6 lesson plans and a huge professional portfolio. My brain is distracted.

For what it's worth, I've never heard anything but awesome things about the Pig, although I've never tried one myself.

my reason for asking about this is...I love the QM...and I love YOB...but what i've noticed that, unbeknownst to me, when I listen to my latest recordings, i'm picking up that i'm playing some more YOB type stuff, which is fine...thats just influences, but with QM as well as the marshall...Im actually sounding a lot like YOB too. Not a bad thing for bedroom practice...but for a band situation and writting original music...i feel like we are sounding too similar and its not MY sound...if that makes sense???

i want to try a bunch of other dirt pedals and get something that I still like and that I can call my own.

In the end, i'm probably overthinking this, like most things in life!

Here's a cure that worked for me. Embrace it. Write a song that intentionally trys to outYOB, YOB's YOB. I wen't on another Sabbath kick recently. Ended up with a song that is extremely sabbathy. I actually thought about not using it, played an early demo for a few people and asked "Is this to much?" the answer I got was yes, but do it anyways cause it's a killer song. So we did. While refining it with the band, two new song were born that sound nothing like sabbath at all. Working through your Mike Scheidt demon will probably be fun and why not take it to an extreme.

You speak the truth ...thats exactly where Im at...written a song that is o YOB that Mike would be proud! I'll try your approach and see how it goes.

I wrote a quick song on bass last night, in between cooking things for dinner and taking care of the baby boy. Just first takes on every part, jumbled everything around until it sounded like a decent arrangement and then fit the drums to follow the riffs and accents a bit more. Did it all 5 minutes at a time over an hour or so, I'll go back and rework everything later if it feels worth it. I didn't even bother recording a guitar part for it, since maybe it'll end up being something I collaborate on with other people. If not I'll go back and lay my own guitar tracks down on it.

I'm going to try to keep writing songs like this in the near future, since it's a method with which I can actually get things done without having a lot of free time. Just thought I'd share and see what people think. Part of it was messing with the bass tone as well. I set up my Dunwich Cthulhu fuzz in a parallel blend with an EQ and used my EBS Multidrive for a fat tube-ish sounding clean blended in.

QM vs Rat...

I just took my Quantum Mystic off of my board in favor of my Rat. I noticed at practice with the way the other guitarist in the band runs his QM that I found myself dialing in Rat tones to get things balanced in the mix. The QM nails Rat tones so if you're going for a Rat tone, just do some tweaking (volume = 2 o'clock, bass = 1 - 2 o'clock, mids = 2 - 3 o'clock, treble all the way off, gain = 3 o'clock is where it worked for me... Windhand tone on the neck pickup) to get it there and save money and pedal board space. I'm not sure about the other features on the Iron Pig. Never played one, but I wouldn't be surprised that the QM couldn't get in the ball park.

Also, I found myself copping some heavy YOB riffage while playing through the QM too. I said fuck it and went with it. Two of the new songs have what started out as straight YOB ripoffs that got morphed into what we were doing anyway so it still sounds like us.

For me, if something was/is 'too XYZ' I always chuck it. Not trying to convince you not to keep awesome songs or whatever, but there's so much saturation that, for me personally, I just don't think adding to the noise is worth it.

That said, Sabbath is always going to be one of my favorite bands (Yob too).

I think it's fine if an influence is readily apparent in a song or two, especially if they are contrasting influences.
On the flip side, Sheavey is a bit to sabbathy, every song. It got old, for me anyways. I really liked them at first but eventually I just would listen to sabbath when I want that.

I've had the Iron Pig and I have the QM. I liked the IP, but for what I hear in my head, the QM just gets there much better. Volume around 2, bass and treble between 1 and 2, mids just shy of 1, and gain to taste = massive heavies through my V4 and V2.
