Power supply question

Post by jrmy »

So, this is not so much a "DIY" question as a "I am stupid when it comes to electricity" question. I have a Pignose Hog 30 amp, which came with a big, official looking power cable. It takes 12v DC, and the thing had some kind of switch on the cable. Unfortunately, I loaned the amp to a friend, and when they returned it, the cable was gone... and since they returned it because they had moved from their old apartment, I'm not ever getting that cable back.

My question is, do I have to buy a new Pignose power supply for this thing ($40), or should any 12v DC supply work? I was hoping to sell this thing or trade it in, since I didn't ever use it even when I had the power supply, so I'd rather not spend the money if I can avoid it.

Oh, and the Hog 30 is has a rechargeable battery... I don't know if that makes a difference.

I'm no expert on these things (plus we're on a different power supply in the UK) but I think the things you need to know are the voltage (which you know), the power output of the adapter (too low can damage the device but I think too high is fine), and whether the tip of the adapter is centre negative or centre positive (this is slightly harder to find out as its not always printed on the adapter). You can buy multi adapters that can do multiple voltages and you can change the polarity of the tip. I guess you need to check the web for the requirements of your amp.
