RIP.
While I am not a fan of his music, I respect the talent and really feel for his son, being in a family band and losing a parent AND bandmate is a horrible experience that no one should have to deal with.

agreed in every respect. i said on another forum that if you can't appreciate talent and true artistry just because the setting's not for you it's rather sad. it's not where he did it, it's that he DID IT.

and did it with a sense of humor unexpected from a "guitar god." it's hard to not be full of yourself when you're an acknowledged innovator in your end of music, but he never took himself that seriously.

R. I. P. - I don't think I ever listened to an entire VH album, but I have total respect for him and the innovations that he brought in the guitar world..... and FLANGERS.

EHV man this really bummed me out more so than Lemmy Killmeister or David Bowie. I have always felt that he had such a specific way a playing and a sound that was defining only to him, which is why he will be a guitar god from here to eternity.

I was jamming to diver down before I got into work today - all of the early DLR records to me still hold up and rock just as hard.

stupid cancer

I was never a massive fan of his music growing up because it was my dads music, but honestly after revisiting the early material I'm kind of kicking myself for not listening sooner.

But regardless of my legitimacy as a fan, his playing technique as well as instrument mods were some revolutionary shit for guitarists everywhere. Hard to deny the mans influence.

What I dig about EVH, apart from the impeccable playing, is that he really seemed to be having fun. Like, when he just for the hell of it throws in a bunch of perfect harmonics all over the fretboard. Who knows how he approached his music, but it always seemed like a synergy between lots of practice, lots of creativity and lots of "eh... wooooo!". I don't really get that feeling with any other shredder, except probably Dimebag. I remember reading some bullshit management book saying "don't sweat the small staff, but it's the details that matter". And that's kinda what I get out of Eddie's approach to the guitar. There are so many tasty details - whether it is rolling off the volume just a wee bit, or tuning his B a bit sharp for certain songs, or throwing in a major third double stop somewhere, or playing triplets for most of a run but then throwing in some a little section with 16th notes...
But then on the whole none of this stuff mattered. He was just rocking the hell out.

I hate it when brothers who are close die. Reminds me of being very far away from my own (still very much alive) bro, and all the times we've had together. Thinking about all the years Alex and Eddie musta spent jamming, goofing off, partying together.
Oof.

For real! A perfect description of what made EVH so special.

not to mention Wolfgang losing not only his father but his mentor, teacher, bandmate, and jamming buddy. it doesn't get much more brutal than that. we all know that truly coming together in music is as intimate as anything human beings can do together. and to lose both of those special kinds of intimacy ("different types of love" as my man Thom put it) simultaneously is heartbreaking to contemplate from 3000 miles away. his pain must be immeasurable.
