Well, sort of. The affordable import version of that guitar.
I stumbled into getting a new Epiphone J-200 for nada a couple months ago. I wouldn’t say it’s the same as a $6k Gibson, but I like it a lot—it’s a very nice guitar. Anyway, I’m playing a lot more acoustic than I have in years, and maybe a little more guitar generally, and it’s just easier to figure out parts on it.
I think one thing might be that it sounds right to me. After I got it I saw that Townsend had written and recorded a lot of Tommy and after on a J-200, and I initially taught myself guitar by figuring out those songs on an old department store acoustic decades back. I don’t know if it’s because I listened to those albums or I learned through that material that was written for a guitar that works like this one does.
So I’m wondering if I similarly need to find my “easy button” for electric. I’m not quite sure what that would be.

Funny thing. I’ve since gotten an Epi LP Classic Worn. I didn’t think I was an LP guy (I briefly had a Gibby LP Studio decades ago that didn’t take) but I’m really digging it. Pretty affordable compared to the price-creeping fancy ones, but solid out of the box—just wanted a light fret polish. Epiphone is cranking out some great stuff.
Maybe a Casino next?
