i think i discovered one problem with my Epiphones: they pot the pickups on them approximately as thoroughly as ancient Egyptians potted the pharaohs. once you get the covers off, they're literally encased in a solid block of wax. though i screwed up and degaussed the bridge PU magnet with my soldering iron trying to get the cover off (a replacement is on the way), the neck PU sounds much better with the wax out and the cover off. this also gives me the oppo to replace the Alnico 5 magnet with an Alnico 2 to round off the sound of the PU a bit.

I just picked up my 75' Epiphone Crestwood today. I hadn't played it for the past few months because it needs a set up after I had the nut replaced. But fuck man, I love humbuckers and the sheer power this guitar kicks out rivals Jawbreaker. I plugged it into my English Muff'n -> Fuck Overdrive and I just wrote a song with lyrics within the first half hour of playing it. Time to take it up to Elderly Instruments and get this guy back in action. I'm sick and tired of single coils.

And the last few gigs I've played I felt the guitar wasn't powerful enough... its no wonder why.

so weirdly, I'm playing the Strat more than any of the Jazzmasters right now. I thinking fixing my '65 Jazzy's output jack might change that, though.
Maybe partying will help.

Still cannot get the sound I want in my head out of a Bongo 5. Sigh. I'm actually thinking of trying either a Rick or a Fender 5. The few Fenders (American made ones) I've tried, seriously played great. The only gripe I have with them is the neck doesn't play as fast as Musicman. They have a lot fatter sound though than Musicman's. I've never tried a Rick but I love the bands I've heard that use Ricks. I want a really fat tone though. A fat as fuck tone. The Bongo is great but way too thin sounding. I can't achieve the clean tone I want when I play clean. Everything sounds extremely hostile and hot. God I'm getting old or something. What the fuck is wrong with me here?????

I was trying to find some thing nice to say.
But it’s called a Bongo and just look at it.

Ok did a set up on my bass. What's weird is the fucking truss rod seemed like it needed some adjusting, so I did, and there is fucking buzz all over the fret board. Well duh! It's because the action is set soo fucking low that any adjustment I was making didn't really make that big of a difference.

I don't understand why some bass players like the action as low as it will go. I get less string tension and all that but fuck man.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it right now. I just get weird about shit every so often. If I do end up flipping (not going to happen soon though), here's my plan. Sell Bongo, tube amp, most of my effects, books, and probably give a few hand jobs for extra cash, then buy a Wal bass. I want a fucking Wal so band that I can taste it!

I know it's kind of fan boyish but I don't care. The Wals I have heard have the best tone I've ever heard. And if I bought one on the cheaps and didn't dig it for some reason, I can ebay that shit for mad cash yo. MAD cash. Ok maybe not, but I certainly wouldn't loss money.

Yea yea...3-4k is too much on a bass. Whatever. I fella can dream can't he?????

man, I was pretty damn happy, but now the EJ Strat has me really loving the 12" fretboard radius and I'm pretty bummed playing my 7.25" radius guits now. Shit.
Maybe partying will help.

I'm set up to accept donations of rad guitars with 7.25" radii any time you're ready, Zounds.

i went out this weekend and jammed with some folks i know, and it reconfirmed my feeling that i love my instruments and setup but have to find somewhere to apply myself that's more compatible with who i am. the rest of this rant belongs in "Spite, Rage."

I think I'm going to stick ROUNDS onto my P/mudbucker once I put it back together. I dunno...I REALLY like the mudbuckers + flats for the super bassy dub kinda sound and I don't want rounds to mess that up.
Whatever, I'll give it a shot.

My japanese Strat has a 62RI neck with the 12" radius and it is glorious.
